Emmy Awards 2014: what they wore

Hot on the heels of Sunday's MTV VMAs, last night saw the small screen's biggest stars glam it up for the annual Emmy Awards - and, as ever, there were some great (and not so great) red carpet looks. Big-skirted gowns were the order of the day for stars including Lena Dunham (who's frouffy frock caused a bit of a stir on Twitter), January Jones and Modern Family's Sarah Hyland. Elsewhere the big fashion trend of the evening was red, with Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, Homeland star Claire Danes and supermodel Heidi Klum amongst the stars to rock fiery looks. Lena Dunham Never shy of a bold red carpet look, the Girls star stood out in this super-saccharine Giambattista Valli Couture gown.

Kiernan Shipka The Mad Men actress's style keeps going from strength the strength, and this darling Antoni Berardi calf-length frock is another hit from the young star

Camila Alves Mrs McConaughey killed it (as usual) in this gorgeous laser-cut Zuhair Murad gown

Christina Hendricks The Mad Men star made the most of her curves in this figure-flaunting Marchesa gown.

Kerry Washington Of course Kerry can get away with a pair of spangly cycling shorts under her Prada. We love her, and we love this look.

Sofia Vergara When your modus operandi is 'sex bomb', there's only one designer to turn to: Roberto Cavalli

Julia Roberts The veteran actress bucked the full-length trend, instead opting to show a little leg in this embellished Elie Saab frock.

Zooey Deschanel Zooey is pretty in pink in this bandeau Oscar de la Renta gown - but is anyone else totally missing her trademark fringe?

Gwen Stefani High-shine was the name of Gwen's fashion game at the Emmys, thanks to her silver Atelier Versace dress.

January Jones Possibly our favourite look of the night belongs to Mad Men star January in her red hot Prabal Gurung gown. Love those shoes too!

Kelly Osbourne We wonder what Kelly's Fashion Police co-hosts made of her Honour dress? For the record, we love it.

Louise Roe Ms Roe shone in this dreamy Monique Lhuillier dress.

Jessica Pare Mad Men actress Jessica is every bit as sexily sophisticated as we've come to expect in this Lanvin pencil dress.

Claire Danes Claire's Givenchy gown was black when it first went down the runway, but the actress arrived in - surprise, surprise - a red version of the frock.

Halle Berry The dusty-pink colour, the subtle leg bomb, the long-fringed pixie cut - everything about Halle's look is perfection.

Kristen Wiig Kristen avoided her Vera Wang gown looking too bridal by beach-babing it up with a deep tan and Cali-cool hair.

Debra Messing The Will & Grace actress stands tall in her navy Angel Sanchez cut-out gown.
