Former Teacher pleads guilty to sex with students (Corona)

Updates with details of plea, background on case

A former high school teacher in Corona pleaded guilty Friday, Feb. 27, to 16 felonies related to having unlawful sex with underage students.

Summer Michelle Hansen, 32, admitted to 16 felonies in a plea to the court: seven counts of oral copulation on a person under age 18, six counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger and three counts of exhibition of lewd material to a minor.

Hansen is scheduled to be sentenced in Superior Court in Riverside on April 3. She is out of custody after posting bail.

Judge Becky L. Dugan, after conferring with Hansen and her attorney, said she would sentence Hansen to three years in custody unless there was something in a pending Probation Department report that indicated a longer sentence was appropriate.
Attorney David Wohl told City News Service that Hansen pleaded guilty because she believed it was in the best interest of both her and her family.

"She was facing 16 charges resulting from five different alleged victims that could have resulted in 13 years in state prison had she been convicted at trial," Wohl said.

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office was against the plea to the court because of the shorter negotiated sentence.

"We opposed the indicated sentence as not appropriate given this is a case involving 16 felonies and five underage victims," district attorney spokesman John Hall said.

Hansen was a special education teacher at Centennial High, which is in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. None of victims was any of her students.

The crimes occurred from May 2012 to May 2013, in her classroom, in a utility room at the school, in her vehicle while parked near one victim's home and at another victim's home, the DA's office said after her arrest in June 2013.

Hansen supposedly sent the boys sexually oriented texts messages and photos using her phone. Her first attorney, David Cohn, said Hansen's phone was hacked and that she was innocent of the charges.

In one instance, according to a Corona police detective, Hansen offered a student sex as a "prize" for doing well in baseball. That encounter happened during Saturday school, where students make up missed school work because of absences, the detective wrote.

Hansen was the second person associated with the Corona-Norco school district to make news Friday. Orange Elementary teacher Shane Kent was arrested on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor -- one of his female students.
